It's a layered hard candy with a propensity to last a long time while being consumed.
So today is Gobstopper Day.
It is observed each September 14 and the confection originates in the UK where "gob" is a slang term for the mouth.
The popularity sprang forth from Brit school boys to the rest of us in due time.
They have been sold in candy counters for as long as I can remember.
I recall going to the little store at the end of Center Street in Blackfoot Idaho as a first grader and buying them along with other things I felt were essential at that time.
A dime or a quarter would really go a long way back then.
They say the candy orignates in ancient Egypt and the process was mechanized in the 1700s.
So if you're so inclined go buy a few jaw breakers and stop that gob of yours posthaste.
