Giving up those Vices

    Recreational Drugs
First I gave up smoking. Having awaken to a spate of being unable to breathe I discarded my remaining Marlboros the following morning along with every ashtray in the house never to pick them up again.

Second I gave up recreational drugs. There was no precipitating event for this aside from mandatory drug testing as a condition for employment. I simply came to a decision that there were quite enough issues in the employment situation without having some addictive personality trait squash my chances otherwise.

So I discarded the weed, pills, and shrooms in a similar fashion to the cigs ... only I gave them away for a small fraction of their cost in an effort to recoup a little fundage.

All of this transpired some thirty years back and I haven't missed nor jonesed for any of it.

When you make up your mind that there are important things in your life and substance use isn't one of them it's a fairly easy decision.

So since that time I've peed in a lot of cups. I have yet to have a positive test for anything for which they tested.

I encounter others in my travels who whine incessantly about being held back in employment because they don't wish to comply with what is required to gain (or keep) that job. I personally believe that the will to work simply isn't strong enough to get there for these poor souls.

I don't stand in criticism of them. I am merely an observer.
