Day of the Seafarer 2022

I was a sailor in the Navy during my impetuous youth. My duties involved the maintenance and operation of a missile system. I was on a warship in a "seagoing rate" with a rotation of 4 years at sea and 2 years ashore.

At the time I thought it a horrid job. You'd be surprised at how much you miss something you thought to be horrid at one time. Looking back, I could have stayed in for a career of 20 years and likely been better off than I am now.

However, that tobacco use I indulged in the accompanying lifestyle likely would have shortened my years considerably.

Today is the Day of the Seafarer, celebrated annually on June 25th under the auspices of The International Maritime Organization. The day recognizes the contributions seafarers make to trade and the international economy by conducting sea transport.

It was first celebrated in 2011 so this year will witness it's 11th observance. The life of a seafarer is not for everyone. I don't suppose I'm really the type for such a career, but find myself much more adaptable as time has progressed.
