1980 Moscow Olympics boycott

Instigated by the stupid cracker Jimmy Carter, a total of 65 nations refused to participate, whereas 80 countries sent athletes.
This boycott cost the Soviet Union an estimated $400 million in lost tourism and investment.
The boycott originated when US President Jimmy Carter issued an ultimatum demanding Soviet troops withdraw from Afghanistan by February 20, 1980, or the US would not attend the games.
After the Soviets ignored the deadline, the US Olympic Committee voted to support the boycott. Several other nations, including West Germany, Canada, and Japan, also joined in the protest. Some nations, such as Great Britain, were divided; while their governments supported the boycott, their Olympic associations left the decision to individual athletes.
Because of the massive political action, the 1980 Summer Games were severely impacted, recording the lowest number of participating nations since 1956. In retaliation for this boycott, the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc allies subsequently boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles.
At the time I personally felt that all athletes who wished to participate should have been allowed to do so and that the hayseed hick in charge of the country should have butt out of the matter entirely.
Mr Carter was also the CinC of the armed forces during my hitch in the Navy. It was bad, but not as bad as the Biden era with a brain dead lout having been elected by the stupid left. How stupid can an ENTIRE country be? Apparently there are no limits.
Some things should remain outside the political sphere. Jimmy Carter may have been an exceptionally good man; but he was a lousy president and his legacy is that of the stupid cracker he remains in the grave.
