Crackers Over The Keyboard Day 2025
     Saltine Crackers

Over the years I have cultivated quite the taste for saltine crackers.

I like them either plain or with various toppings of my own concoction.

Peanut butter and sometimes jelly are two of my favorite toppings.

I am also one to build an intricate tuna salad with which I will eat saltine crackers as well.

Today is Crackers Over The Keyboard Day.

It is marked each August 28 under the auspices of Thomas and Ruth Roy and goes against that conventional wisdom that eating crackers around a keyboard is taboo. I'm fine with conventions which go in the face of what we've been told over the years. It is said that the day is not necessarily limited to crackers, that cookies are indeed a suitable substitute. Regardless, I hope you'll take a moment and enjoy the day.

Happy Crackers Over The Keyboard Day to you.

Cookie the Cockatoo passed at age 83
Cookie the Cockatoo

Birds are typically long lived animals, particularly varieties of parrot.

There was one known as both the oldest cockatoo in captivity and formerly known as the oldest living parrot.

He was a pink cockatoo (Cacatua leadbeateri) named Cookie.

He was hatched June 30, 1933 at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

He lived at Brookfield Zoo, near Chicago, Illinois, United States and exceeded the average lifespan for his species becoming one of the longest lived birds on record.

He held a listing in the Guinness World Records as the oldest living parrot in the world.

Attempts were made to introduce Cookie to a female pink cockatoo in the 1950s. The alliance failed because Cookie rejected her as "not nice to him".

He passed August 27, 2016 after a long and eventful life of recognition.

National Toilet Paper Day 2025
    TP for my bung hole
Today is National Toilet Paper Day.

It is it is observed each year on August 26.

It finds itself in use by most Americans and various others internationally.

Much of the time it's importance is emphasized when we enter a public restroom and realize there is none. Now, many more find themselves using toilet paper along with a bidet.

Before the advent of toilet paper, there were leaves and "thes tersorium" Which is a type of sponge which would be rinsed it off and left for the next person.

Aaaaaaaaargh !

It's really a simple invention which has found it's niche in the area of health and hygiene.

Happy National Toliet Paper Day.

Kiss and Make Up Day 2025
kiss

The act of "kissing and making up" signals the end of problematic relations between two people.

Some use the term "grudge" — although I say the word is a bit harsh.

Then there is the matter of the dreaded "kissy face" which simply incenses me to ferocity so can you really win with a gruff ruffian such as myself ?

Forgive and forget marks the tenet for continued relationships in the presence of strife and stress between two who have been otherwise lovebirds.

Relationships can be reworked and repaired and we bury the hatchet with the act of kissing and making up.

People are not static creatures. We are dynamic with physical and emotional ebbs and flows which culminate in that life we display.

Today is Kiss and Make Up Day.

They are said to be two essential moves toward settling any disagreement with a significant another. I have always been one to get those lips when appropriate. I am also less of a grudge bearer than I was earlier in life.I suppose we can all take note that kissing and making up makes a big difference in interpersonal relations between two who are close.

In the meantime I'll make all efforts not to beat you like I own you.

Happy Kiss and Make Up Day.

Pluto Demoted Day 2025
    Pluto
As a child I recall learning the planets.

At that time (and supposedly still) there are nine of them:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto

Things were going well for a long time until one fateful day in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union decided they would reclassify Pluto as a "dwarf" planet.

Thus, we now suffer Pluto Demoted Day which is observed annually each August 24.

Our need to classify things invariably becomes some self limiting exercise in elitism and overstepping upon the public by some group of self serving so-called "experts".

We have this propensity for allowing people to apply their subjective notions to our universe when in actuality we should just poke an ungreased 10 gauge shotgun up their ass and fire — thereby eliminating the problem of constant interference by those who view themselves in the know.

To hell with the International Astronomical Union. They don't need to exercise such fine control over my life ...

OR my universe.

National Be An Angel Day 2025
Angel
Now here's one I would not expect to become ...

Today is National Be An Angel Day.

It is celebrated each August 22 and is a day dedicated to performing randome acts of kindness and helping others.

The day is said to be inspired by the concept of being an "angel" to some in need.

Ostensibly we should attempt positive impacts on those lives of other people through gestures or acts of support. Now I am not one for pretentious showboating and I try to be kind to others as a matter of course. So if you're so inclined sprout those wings and fly around doing as much good as you can for your fellow men and women.

Happy National Be An Angel Day.

National Senior Citizens Day 2025
    John Herbert
I recall as senior citizen status was approaching me early on how I denied and avoided it like the plague.

By the time I turned 70 I was sure I had beaten the rap.

Far be it from me to become some old fart devoid of any value to society, but alas it did indeed finally catch up with me.

So now I just accept it and I mull through the day in this retired status regardless of how much I despise it.

Today is National Senior Citizens Day since 1988 under the auspices of President Ronald Reagan.

It is supposedly a day to recognize and appreciate the contributions of older adults and recognize those issues which affect their existence and well being.

So while I cannot speak for others I simply would like it known that I do not require anything from anyone.

I'm squeaking by as best I can.

Save your pity and good wishes for someone other than me if you don't mind.

Happy National Senior Citizens Day anyway.

World Mosquito Day 2025
Anopheles mosquito
Today is World Mosquito Day.

It is an August 20 happening annually in commemoration of a Brit doctor named Sir Ronald Ross who discovered in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

Before this controlling the spread of malaria was impossible though the discovery of quinine in treatment had alleviated the problem of treatment.

So all in all it's a good thing but I dare say that we who spend the bulk of our day indoors sitting at a computer have little to fear from malaria vectors anyway.

Happy World Mosquito Day.

National Photography Day 2025
     Hasselblad SLR

Yeah. One of those other failed endeavors of mine was photography.

I once thought I was going to be the next Ansel Adams — you know become renoun fetching exhorbinant fees for my work.

Didn't happen.

Today is National Photography Day aka National Photo Day.

It originated around 1837 in France.

It is observed each August 19 and is the photographers moment in the sun.

Though an unofficial holiday, the day does provide impetus for those who snap pictures to display and be praised for their work.

In this day of digital photography and everyone sporting a cell phone with camera capabilities I dare say the real "camera" may fall by the wayside.

I hope not.

World Never Give Up Day 2025
Never Give Up
I have been a quitter. I'm not proud of the fact, but it's true.

I have given up on projects and suffered severe consequences as a result.

Over the years I find that you don't just give up on something because of adversity.

You don't quit because everything around you is crumbling.

You only quit if you die in the fray.

One of those hard knock lessson life with teach you if you deviate from the correct path.

Today is World Never Give Up Day since 2019 under the auspices of one Alain Horoit who originally called it "Never Give Up Day".

It is a day which honors the characteristics of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity.

The day is observed each August 18.

It is an international observance elebrating resilience, determination, and the unyielding spirit of individuals and communities.

It promotes staunch dedication in those pursuits of people everywhere.

Robert De Niro is a stupid democrat
Robert De Niro is a woke idiot
Robert Anthony De Niro was born on born August 17, 1943 and unfortunately continues to live.

He was once one of my most favorite American actors.

He is also said to be a director, and film producer.

While some say he is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential actors of his generation I would just as soon watch him bleed out slow and painful.

He is a stupid human being who does not care about what is good for the country.

His woke attitudes have caused me to stop engaging his work at any level in observance of the pitiful moron numbskull that he has manifested publicly.

He is an agent and patsy of the democratic party and needs to be removed with extreme prejudice.

He has various accolades that I would normally list. Unfortunately, all he is to me now is a human turd without redeeming virtue of any sort.

Today is his birthday. If he sees the day he will be 82 years old.

Die pig die.

Boo !

National Authenticity Day 2025
Dave sketch
"To thine own self be true."

The phrase is a famous quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet. It refers to the concept of being honest oneself and to exist according to one's own values and principles. I've always thought the idea suggests that being true to oneself is the foundation for being honest and trustworthy with others.

I didn't always practice this. In the early 1970s I would confabulate features of existence in order to make my meager existence seem more appealing.

I must have unconsciously thought I wasn't good enough for the company I kept. Turns out that I exceed those parameters by and large and I've been much happier since I simply present that which I am and go forth among my fellow man. That backstabbing lot with whom I once socialized turned out to be the weak link. Not me.

Today is National Authenticity Day.

It is observed each August 16 annually.

Authenticity is the ability to present yourself as you are.

Your features. Your lifestyle. Your character. Your uniqueness.

Following the herd simply was never for me.

So now I attempt to shine my light on the world and be that person I always was ... but suppressed because I thought him to be unmanly or unworthy of the attentions of others.

I must say that my authentic self is vastly preferable than the fantasy to which I was once prone.

Be who you are. Nothing else will be better than the real you.

Happy National Authenticity Day.

National Relaxation Day 2025
    relaxing in a hammock
Relaxation is about kicking back and limiting physical activity while you engage thoughts or napping or simply resting in place.

Today is National Relaxation Day.

It happens each August 15 since 1985 under the auspices of one Sean Moeller, a 9 year old Michigander.

I suppose the day is primarily about chilling out and promotes stress relief through meditation and other relaxation techniques.

So if you you have a busy schedule otherwise I hope you'll take advantage of the day.

If you're retired like I am perhaps it is less symbolic of your existence.

At any rate I hope you have a fine National Relaxation Day either doing or not doing whatever you choose.
