Internaut Day 2022
Sir Tim Berners Lee
My life has been computers. A facet of that life has been the internet. However, my career has not been based on the internet — with a small stint as a web developer not withstanding ... which as it turns out was a waste of time entirely.

Hardware, Software, and Media are my forte. I pride myself on troubleshooting and breakfix operations most of all.

With each passing day I grow more weary of the blog and web presence I maintain simply for the entertainment of sophomoric hackers who would attempt to breach my frontier.

I suppose you could just say I'm bored with it all.

Today is known as "Internaut Day". It is marked each August 23 as an homage to the invention of the World Wide Web by Sir Tim Berners Lee and of course I view it as a worthy endeavor ... but it just doesn't float my boat like it does with a lot of others in my midst.

An "internaut" is said to be a person who has real world expertise in those technologies which comprise the Internet and a working understanding of it's history and evolution as well.

I have the tech stuff down pat and know a lot of the history and evolution.

Now if I could only give a crap about it. I fear I have been jaded by the petty endeavors of those who like to break into sites and attempt damage.

I'm just not attuned to the entirety of the internet because I find too much of it petty pursuits which should be unnecessary if the ISPs would force their customers to behave.

Fat chance of that ever happening.

Choking down another bowl of Bran Buds
    Kellogs Bran Buds

Yeah, I eat bran buds. About a cup a serving. I like the buds over the straight allbran cereal because it's less twig like in presentation.

Though I do believe that sufficient soaking in almond or other milk allows it to assume a more swallowable texture ...

Rather like mush.

Now then, though it's obvious that I have a frank aversion to the stuff it is probably a curiosity as to why I would subject my palate to such misery.

I suppose you can sum it all up in a single word: effect.

I don't eat it for the taste. I don't eat it because I enjoy it. I eat it for the effect it has on my elimination.

I feel that my fiber intake is insufficient otherwise and make it a point to down a bowl of bran buds several times weekly.

There are worse things than bran buds ... like chemical laxatives that don't work. I recall a time when X-Lax was the single most effective gut bomb on the planet. Those days are gone.

I can take a large dose and it consistently does nothing. I think it likely has to do with the freshness of the product which has come under question frequently in recent history.

I'll stick to the mechanical remedies for this reason.

Internet Self-Care Day 2022
monitors in the matrix

Well, I hate to be this ETERNAL curmudgeon, but we have yet another one of those days I feel is for those found lacking.

This failure of intellectual vigor and interest leads us down the trail of 'follow the herd' mentality and gets done only if everyone else is doing it.

I give you, Internet Self-Care Day.

This is an annual observance held each 21st of August and is ostensibly dedicated to using the internet to locate resources that assist you in taking care of yourself.

Now I tell you, between the orthodox practicing monkeys on webmd and the buffoons on wikipedia there is not much left to either the imagination or to say.

Can it be that my orientation to life itself is far too lofty?

If you cannot handle your own research in those matters which involve your personal well being there is some lapse in your existence.

Food, exercise, sleep, medical or dental care, and other choices which constitute aspects of daily living are theoretically the purview of the person living the life.

Perhaps this is why there appears to be a sharp decline in longevity as evidence by the local obituaries anymore. Seems like the bulk of those passing are young people.

Who is dropping the ball here ?

I suppose it may be a valuable construct for the disorganized huddled masses but really and truly a good electronic calendar and a browser will allow you to find a track all the resources you require without a day being set aside for the task.

I for one can handle all aspects of my existence without utilizing a "day" to provide me with the impetus to take care of myself.

Good luck in the future and I'll attempt at being more cordial.

New RESTRICTED banner
    Restricted Content

I wrote a new "rated R" (restricted) banner for the blog sidebar.

It's more inclusive in a frank, reality oriented way.

The 610 pixel original is scaled to the 250 pixel sidebar so its not obtrusive yet remains readable.

Bottom line here is if you're:

woke or

have a case of terminal political correctness

This place is likely not for you.

Furthermore, I am unlikely to care how offended you might end up as well.

Save the drama for your mama.

Have a nice day.

Minority Enterprise Development Week 2022
Dixie Boy Firecrackers
Like the "affirmative action" debacle which began the subsidies — we continue to provide hand outs to minorities in this country hell bent on undeserved reparations and picking up the tab for everybody and their mama seeking entitlements which also are totally without merit.

Thus was initiated that belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

No wonder your automatic weapon toting hellspawn offspring have a sense of entitlement.

So this has become extended to projects which are difficult and requires effort. The pursuit of business beyond the capabilities of the principals indicates a need for further hand outs to keep these messes afloat.

Those who cannot compete are supplied designated slots through which they may impart their inferior capabilities into The Republic as if we haven't ruined our competitive edge on the world stage enough already.

Responsibility and impetus for success is becoming a function of support mechanisms beyond the principals of enterprise. Just another arm of entitlement.

It's rather like the inevitable concept of taking a dump. You can either take one or leave it.

I'm strictly going to leave it.

National Bad Poetry Day 2022
    Bullwinkle in tux
Poetry was once a serious pursuit of mine. That was then and this is now.

Whereas I once viewed myself as poetic I now ignore the craft as meaningless and trivial.

There are good poets out there. I never considered myself to be one.

So each August 18 we have National Bad Poetry Day. Ostensibly this is an opportunity to try to exercise a little meter and rhyme scheme.

It also provides that excuse for failed attempts such as those of my own.

I suppose the proper name for my poetry is doggerel which is an irregular really bad poetry fit only for dogs.

Meretricious is another word for shoddy poetic attempts. It refers to work which may be attractive yet lacks value or integrity and indeed, the word root relates to those characteristics of a prostitute.

So let it be known that Dave no longer whores himself out in the attempt at bad poetry.

So be it. There might have been a time but it has long passed.

Baby Boomers Recognition Day 2022
older boomer
So August 17 is said to bring us Baby Boomers Recognition Day. Though I am a boomer the day is somewhat anticlimactic for me personally because I cannot relate to the reason stated for the day upon which it is held.

Boomers are said to be those individuals born between 1946 and 1964. They came about due to the increased births after World War II and the great depression.

Seems that the passing of those events made everyone decide they needed to lay around and breed.

There is some confusion regarding the actual day. I've seen source materials stating August 16 and others stating August 17. I suppose that too is a function of the advancing age and declining mental capacity of the baby boomers in general.

Regardless, the day is said to have been selected because it is inclusive of those days in which Woodstock was held.

Woodstock has never meant anything to me personally. Thusly, I shall never recognize the day again.

Yeah, these days need to both be hammered down across references to them and not recognize some irrelevant musical concert which was primarily a nasty no hygiene drug riddled goings on anyway.

Don't call me a boomer anymore.

True Love Forever Day 2022
    True Love Forever Day

True love forever is relative to where you are in life. Some of us meet and become soulmates early on. Others of us are late bloomers and delay til later — sometimes very much later.

True love is said to last forever and that no time or space between can cast it asunder. This is True Love Forever Day and it is a time to show that special someone the way that you feel.

My personal relationships have come and gone and I feel that at this juncture I have met my true love forever ...

But age and experience have tempered that crazy aspect which once took control of my attractions and I try to be a kinder, gentler, and socially aware individual I never knew early on.

The origins of the day are to be found in Robert James Waller's 1992 novel, The Bridges of Madison County.

The premise is a somewhat fantastic spin on reality so I was never really attracted to the book mostly due to that era in which it was released and the type of reading in which I was primarily enagaged.

This leaves me to my own devices regarding the day and what it means to me.

Couple this with the stream of mistakes I have made in matters of the heart early on and it's easy to see why I don't get pushy nor go pawing all over my chosen one.

Life is a journey, not a destination. Mine has been fraught with the pitfalls associated with failures of comprehension and understanding.

However, I have indeed arrived — a number of years back now — and I am now content to feel as I do without any need for control of anything or anyone.

I suppose maturity hits us all at some juncture. I'm content to be who I am.

Happy True Love Forever Day to you.

You know, it's always something
The middle of last week found me in a state of irresponsibility.

I had allowed all of my SSL/TLS certificates to lapse resulting in browser errors saying how they had expired and there was no security and this could be the portends of some personal catastrophe should you contine ...

So thusly I found myself without access to the mail server with which I could verify domain control and it was indeed a sticky wicket.

Finally, I had reached the point where everything should have been copacetic but found myself not receiving the domain verification emails.

I had requested subnets from the vendor that I might punch a hole in the firewall to accommodate them in perpetuity. This fell on deaf ears and nobody responded to repeated requests.

So I cancelled the order then requested a refund for cause and pursued the same certs elsewhere.

In retrospect, I likely would have been better served by just temporarily stopping the firewall seeing how infantile some vendors are during discussion of ancillary technical aspects of their business.

The second vendor accommodated my subnet inquiry and voila I am now up and running for another year on new certs.

In my never ending quest to benefit from past mistakes I have set a recurring reminder on my calendar to renew 15 days prior to expiration.

robbery
What an insane bunch of nothing. The browser manufacturers and their SSL/TLS racket along with their "trusted" Certificate Authority requirement is merely a contrived career intended to benefit unskilled oafs touting a need which could be handled otherwise and is one of those petty money grubbing rackets masquerading as security and encryption necessities.

It's rather like that other joke called search engine optimization aka SEO. It's designed to provide incomes for the other unskilled impersonating computer professionals. They take your money for nothing as well.

However, I will comply with the cert ponzi scheme in my never ending pursuit of appropriate comportment in the public domain.

We all know how I feel about it otherwise. The dead horse has been thoroughly beaten.

Happy Birthday Rebecca 2022
My niece is celebrating her birthday.

I was present behind the VHS camcorder at her own Cesarean delivery so long ago.

They gave me a face mask which ballooned outward with each exhalation I made. I recall her neonatologist Dr Sharada Pai, with whom I worked in the early 1970s checking me out as if she thought I might faint or something. In retrospect it was all very amusing.

Rebecca is all about celebrating those birthdays of her children and I thought it would be nice to remember her on this day.

Happy Birthday Rebecca

Elvis Week 2022
Elvis Presley

The late Mrs Hortense Rawl "Tiki" Stack of Columbia SC was the consumate Elvis fan.

I went to her house several times prior to her passing in September of 2007 and we had goodly discussions of Elvis and I could tell from her enthusiasm that she was really a fan of the man and his music.

We are in the midst of Elvis week. It runs from August 9th through the 17th and is a vehicle for Elvis fans everywhere to get out and celebrate the man, his illustrious career, music, and that icon he became to American culture.

The life and legacy of Elvis eclipses the events of Elvis week.

That phenom which was him will never be forgotten as evidenced by the stream of fans heading to Graceland and that piece of the Earth he called his own.

However, in the background the one thing thoughts of Elvis bring to me are my memories of Mrs Stack and her steady optimism and enthusiastic presence. I always enjoyed her company. I never spent time with Elvis or considered myself a fan.

IBM PC Day 2022
    IBM PC
August 12 is said to be IBM PC Day due to the fact that on August 12, 1981 IBM Introduced the first version of their Personal Computer, aka the IBM Model 5150.

Let me tell you, back in the day it was a 5000 dollar inspiration for all the covetousness I could muster.

Luckily, my work afforded me all the keyboard time I could handle and it was the beginning of my career direction changing from the oldie but goodie mainframe and mini days.

Ah, but I did miss the DEC PDP-11 series and MicroVax nonetheless. Something about wire wrapping boards in a backplane for configuration just appealed to me.

This marvel ran at a blistering 4.77 MHz yawn sporting an Intel 8088 microprocessor running on Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system — which they of course marketed as "IBM-PC DOS".

Compaq released the first clone in 1983 and thus began the decline of IBM in the PC business.

Yes, boys and girls I predate the PC by a number of years and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I kind of grew into the field ... or it grew into me.

Anyhoo whereas I was once a bastion and subject matter expert as an MS DOS master and now I'm mostly a Unix head. Call me fickle.

Happy IBM PC Day to you !

Presidential Joke Day 2022
the voters biggest mistakes
This day is SUPPOSED to recognize the humor often found and yet unappreciated in the executive branch of government.

However, given the fact that two of the biggest presidential jokes are also profound tragedies for The Republic, I think I'll forego any hysterical laughter if you don't mind.

The idiotic blunders, missteps, bad judgement, destruction of the military, support of our enemies, and criminal behavior are no laughing matter.

John F Kennedy was killed for far less than that with which these buffoons have gotten away.

So this is Presidential Joke Day.

Obama and Biden are by far the biggest Presidential Jokes to ever befall the United States of America.

Boo Brigand Obama.
Boo unscrupulous immoral crime boss Biden.

Burn in Hell both of you along with anyone and everyone who supports your piss poor asses.
