National Bryan Day 2024
    Bryan and Elijah
Today is National Bryan Day.

It happens each April 23rd.

The name Bryan comes from an old Middle English language that mostly lacks definite spelling rules.

It is thought to have Celtic roots.

The day is meant to honor and celebrate all of the Bryans who are dear to us.

The sketch is of Robert Bryan Jr, the son of my brother, Bryan Sr.

He is shown admiring his newborn son whom he named Elijah.

He is a Chief Quartermaster in the Navy.

It was his chosen field and he took the notion of enlisting very seriously and is now at the top of the enlisted chain of command.

So good luck and smooth sailing, Chief.

National IT Service Provider Day 2024
4th iteration of my server cluster
I am listed as an ISP in many whois database queries. Likely due to the subnet I operate on the public domain. I provide access to various things over the public networks and indeed tend to be more than less generous with that which I have to offer.

Of late I have been trying to curtail some of the access to my resources. I am down to a single IP address for client connections others whereas I used to maintain two.

The much newer requests for wireless network access became too much about a year ago when I placed an additional node in for my mom. She now gets 150 megabytes of wireless and the neighbors beyond her want those access credentials. I'm afraid this isn't possible. I don't trust the judicious use of my resources by those I do not know well. There is too much out there which would get me in trouble to make some guest node with anonymous access. It's simply not feasible to court illegal network behaviors.

I maintain a well provisioned server cluster with redundancy of critical systems and failover should the need arise. This has only been needed once in 20 years of operation. My cluster is on it's 4th iteration and is thus far the most sophisticated software arrangement I have implemented.

Today is National IT Service Provider Day. It is observed each April 22 annually.

The day is about IT service providers and their contributions to business and commerce in the nation. I must admit my contributions to business become increasingly less as time goes on.

However, I am right on any hardware or software issue which may arise and will firewall hacking attempts by interlopers in a heartbeat.

The literature would have you think that the field of IT has existed for centuries. My personal spin on this would be the 1960s with Grace Hopper and those early bit switch operated monstrosities. I entered the picture right about the PDP 11/73 and Microvax series. So though I am old there is much about IT which predates my existence. I predate the personal computer by a number of years.

There is alot to be said for being tech savvy. I was able to enjoy a rewarding career from which I recently retired because the university degree programs did not provide realtime skills whereas I had a full repetoire which put the theory laden college graduates with whom I competed for available positions to shame.

So love them or hate them technological devices are here to stay. Whereas I once claimed to be a generalist I no longer pursue this designation. It seems that I have gravitated toward the server/workstation model even though I began working on notebooks with these ham like hands of mine. I decline to use smart phones as internet devices because they are even smaller than the notebooks I also shun.

There has been a lot of water under the bridge since I began as an IT professional around 1979. This was when I departed the navy and began doing work in electronics. When I was placed before a keyboard and it was determined that I was a natural at doing algebra with word like constructs it was on.

The rest — so we say — is history. Happy National IT Service Provider Day.

Tuna Rights Day 2024
Yesterday I had sushi at Inakaya Watanabe in Saint Andrews with Sam. The food was plentiful and I enjoyed myself immensely. One of those things of which I partook was Bluefin Toro which is fatty tuna from a specific species. The market price was steep but I could not be restrained from a very nice portion.

I also had unagi (freshwater eel), salmon, mackerel, several species of roe and a specialty called a "salad roll" consisting of a rolled cucumber stuffed with crab. Since I hadn't been at the sushi bar in a very long time the check was pretty much up there in the planetary region.
Just to be clear, I am not one to affix "rights" to animals beneath the human species. I feel that the animals were placed here for us to have dominion over and utilize as food in accordance with the Levitical food laws.

HOWEVER, this is ostensibly Tuna Rights Day. It is held each April 21 annually.

    Atlantic bluefin tuna
It is noted that the world demand for the consumption of tuna places it below sustainable levels.

Sustainability, once a valuable adjective to be applied to everything which may be depleted has been hijacked by the idiot WEF and UN and as such is less valuable than it once was. It has been demoted to an excuse for their domination and curtailing of human rights which should always take precedence.

It's as though they believe they have been bestowed the divine right of kings and own the planet instead of being that stupid bunch of other human germs infesting it.

I note that the Japanese are not concerned for sustainability and will deplete the planet of everything sooner or later if they have their way. They also will never allow the WEF or UN to control them which is an aspect of their jurisdiction I greatly respect.

So the nutrient rich tuna is more than just part of the marine food chain. It a commodity to be protected from those who would eliminate them from the face of the earth by over fishing. Our pursuit of mindful consumption for sustainably-sourced tuna will go far to ensure they are around much longer.

Happy Tuna Rights Day.

420 2024
sinse flower
Here's another April 20 and yet another 420.

The day is about cannabis, both sativa and indica — and it's use by the masses.

Back in the day I was quite the head with the operation phototrons and and my adventures in honey oil, blue stripe, christmas tree, and of course skunk.

Then there were those mistakes I made associated therewith ...

It's been quite a run to have ended so abruptly as it did. It's a shame when you have to allow others to rule your life. So I gave weed up rather than submit to the whims of some employer and the discounts afforded by their insurance company.

I've talked about 420 here for many years and even though I no longer partake, I certainly don't have a problem with you doing so.

Personal freedoms are pretty important to me and this includes your recreational drug use. Similarly, the permissive legislative branch of government in Oregon are finding out that the decriminalization of all drugs has been rather foolhardy.

The drug content of marijuana is far less problematic in the long run. I used it for many years with no deleterious effects until everyone and their mother began drug testing.

I simply decided that a drug test was never going to prevent my employment and gave up the stuff cold turkey.

The beneficial effects of this teetotaling attude came along and along and I never had any withdrawal during the process.

So here I sit drug free except for those prescriptions I am told correct my "inferior genetics" for many years now.

If you do partake, happy 420 to you !

Sylvester the Cat Birthday 2024
    Sylvester and Junior
Back in my childhood I was a big fan of Warner Brothers lineup of cartoon characters. Indeed I would dutifully catch each broadcast of the Bugs Bunny Show and I enjoyed the parade of characters across the screen as their theme song Overture played.

Sylvester and his son Junior were two of my favorites. I always related to the dramatic Junior ... particularly when he donned a paper bag on his head and proclaimed "Oh the shame of it all".

I also enjoyed the antics of Sylvester and tweetie bird in particular as well.

So the birthday of Sylvester the Cat is April 19. It's a big deal to we who were active participants in his career and witnessed those suffering succotash moments first hand.

Sylvester was first introducted by cartoonist Friz Freleng in 1945. Therefore he predates me by a decade or so. To a child such as myself he proved to be an interlude of humor and laughter and I have fond memories of him for this penchant to make me laugh out loud.

So happy birthday Sylvester. Tell Junior, Tweetie, and Granny I said hello.

International Jugglers Day 2024
juggler
I've only known one juggler in my life. He was the son of a chiropractor and into muscle control, was a practicing exhibitionist — and sometimes was quite a bit obnoxious so juggling never became something I looked forward to watching.

The earliest recorded juggling was around some 2000 BC in Egypt. The images were taking from murals within the crypts there. Some 1500 years later juggling appeared in Greek art.

I think the coordination and dexterity are admiral as long as you don't drown it in a multitude of distressing social habits as did my former friend.

Today is International Juggler’s Day.

The day is held under the auspices of The International Jugglers Association since the mid 1980s.

The day is held each April 18 annually. It is all about juggling and its many accomplished practitioners.

Not being a prop comic as such I personally would only be interested in juggling the more exotic objects ...

Just for their shock value. You know, axes, lit torches, knives, etc.

So if you're so inclined go gather a few props and practice your skills until they are presentable. Try to keep your objectionable traits under wraps when you perform.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2024
    Homeless little girl
I feel for the homeless.

My life has never involved personal homelessness and for that I will always be grateful.

The thought of a homeless child with no place to go and be safe and warm is a harrowing thought ...

And it brings shudders to my soul for the victims of this predicament.

Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day.

Since 1990 it happens on the third Wednesday in April making it April 17 this year.

Held under the auspices of the woke ass Australians.

It's purpose is to raise awareness and public discussion of those homeless young people in ann effort to devise innovative solutions which can be maintained to meet their need.

It seems that youth homelessness goes hand in hand with domestic and family violence and this gives added impetus for that need to devise readily available relief mechanisms.

Anyway, I consider homelessness to be a universal problem.

The fact that you're hopelessly woke and Australian should not be a qualifying factor in this instance.

National Orchid Day 2024
orchids

I like orchids. I like the delicate flowers suspended from long stems and the leave tufts at the bottom. Take a pot,

•  add really good rich soil of varying consistencies based on the variety of orchid,
•  adequate sunlight — but not too much,
•  keep them close to 65-75° during the day and 55-65° at night
•  feed quarter strength 20-10-20 fertilizer and
•  water them weekly, sometimes with ice cubes
•  in a room with a humidity of 50-75%
•  Note that the different species have varying requirements.

This is how we did it at my job with the incorporated municipality.

Today is National Orchid Day. It is observed on April 16 each year. The day is associated with honoring the memory of our loved ones and others dear to our hearts.

The day originates here in South Carolina in 2015 under the auspices of a couple, Mike and Faith Young who lost a daughter whom they had decided to name 'Orchid' the previous year. Such a sad tale regarding the day for such a beautiful flower.

Anyway, when you see those orchids in the stores wrapped in cellophane you might nab one or a few and give it a shot at growing them. If you give them adequate attention and stroke their leaves you may find yourself surrounded in tropical beauty.

Happy Orchid day and rest in peace, Orchid.

Federal Tax Deadline 2024
April 15 is tax day
Monday, Apr 15, 2024 marks the deadline for filing your federal income tax return.

There have been years when it was later but this year it seems to have been returned to it's original time.

Time to let the dastardly democrats collect your money to give to all the illegal aliens they have brought to the country.

By golly Mom and I filed in February. The only disconcerting aspect of this surrounds the updates to the H&R Block tax software I used after the returns were mailed. Sometimes I don't think software vendors think or care about their products very much.

Mom got her refund already — in record time I might add. I didn't get any refund. I didn't pay anything either.

Retirement fundage is pretty tight on both ends of the equation.

I'm glad it's over for another year !

Another birthday ...
birthday cake

So here I embark on the sixty ninth anniversary of my birth. The the advent of my 69th year finds me retired, leisurely, and bored out of my ever loving mind.

If I didn't have a sophisticated server cluster on a 5 node public network to keep me busy I really would go crazy.

Everybody keeps telling me how I'm not "really" old. People are mistaking me for being 20 to 30 years younger than I actually am. I'm afraid that all of this simply is not sinking in to say the least. However ...

Happy Birthday to me.

Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day 2024
    Trump
Unfair prosecution used to be the purview of European tyrants and their sycophants.

Unfortunately, the brigand democrat party and their stupid boot licking voters have pursued the opposition candidate in the 2024 election unfairly in a weponized judicial system which has become known as "lawfare" and what began in the Obama administration has carried over to his senile vice president Biden in his own STOLEN administration.

Know this, democrats:

You have incurred the wrath of more voters than JUST me.

It is our mission to vote you out of office by any means necessary.

You are the curs who would engage in unwarranted criminal prosecution for political ends and New York in particular is going to regret their New York Attorney General the Soros whore Letitia James and Soros acolyte Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Leonard Bragg Jr.

This will never be over.

New York will always be remembered as the state without fairness and the weaponized center of unfair prosecution upon the earth as will Fani Willis of Atlanta Georgia.

Thus we hold our own day of remembrance for the aggression against candidates in communist New York, in their event called the Unfairly Prosecuted Persons Day which is observed each year on April 13.

We will remember your shoddy treatment of a patriot and will never go away you three democrat whores of Babylon and George Soros, the enemy of the free world.

Day of Silence 2024
coffin
Ah, our continuing LGBTQ mess. It's likely been around since people have been around.

Time was it was kept in the closet where it belonged.

Nowadays, too many want to flaunt their aberrant sexuality inappropriately incurring the wrath of a lot of "straight" people in their midst.

Today is the so-called Day of Silence. It has been around since 1996 and is held on April 12 this year.

Ostensibly, it is meant to provide a reason to whine about the rejection LGBTQ pervs feel regarding their level of acceptance in society and wonder why the sicko immoral unscrupulous vote grubbing democrats are the only ones who "accept" them.

So while I remain a staunchly "live and let live" person and stay out of the personal affairs of others, LGBTQ individuals may wish to consider just how much some of us would like to silence permanently those we consider to be deviants.

Happy Day of Silence you debauched, debased, profane, vitiated human beings you. Diverse that fudge packers and carpet munchers. Hopefully, at least you're not so stupid as to think you can be the opposite sex just because you "want" to regardless of your chromasomes.

Jonathan Winters passed 11 years ago
    Jonathan Winters
A longstanding favorite comic of mine was Jonathan Winters.

I used to revel in his antics as a character actor on television when I was a much younger man. He could phase through character after character while being interviewed.

His performance spheres included characters, improv, — and his spots on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show became the stuff of comedic legend.

Jonathan Harshman Winters III was born November 11, 1925 in Dayton, Ohio. He married Eileen Schauder and they had two children.

He served in the US Marine Corps from 1943 through 1946 and attained the rank of corporal. He passed on this day in 2013 at Montecito, California at age 87 of natural causes having an active career from 1949 until his death.

He received many awards for his work over the course of his career but I feel that the esteem of his audience is the grandest testament to that who he was, the consumate comedic professional.

There have been many others who have come and gone and others who likewise were great at their crafts but none surpassed Jonathan Winters for versatility and downright funniness at every turn.

I hope he and Robin Williams are in the eternity sharing a few memories and laughs.

Rest in peace.

Encourage a Young Writer Day 2024
Young Writer
When I was young I did a lot of writing. Poetry, short stories, plays and such. It went pretty much unnoticed and without encouragement as nobody except my mother was really interested in me during those years.

I underwent a year or so of intense English grammar and syntax study due to my mother's dissatisfaction with my grades in a couple of areas. As time progressed this cascaded to my writing skills which improved as well as my general grasp of the English language.

Later in life I found myself at work writing things others published under their bylines and it was a frustrating world of stolen work and others assuming credit for things they could never do.

The words used were "let us use your writing because it's so much better than ours and after all we're all on the same team". I should have told the thief NO and quit. However, I relented resulting in their copyright being placed on my work and it becoming claimed as their property.

Today is Encourage a Young Writer Day. It is an annual April 10 occurance which is meant to inspire the natural storyteller in children.

It naturally cultivates vocabulary, creativity, imagination, and the discipline required to write. It is a time for ideas and dreams to come to life on the written page.

I hope you can take the opportunity to assist a young writer in their endeavors at becoming the next Samuel Langhorne Clemens or J K Rowling.

Happy Encourage a Young Writer Day to you.
