Pilgrims Land at Plymouth Today in 1620

In the 80s I visited my Navy buddy, the late Jerry R. Landry in his home town of Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. It was a glorious few days where he squired me around showing me the various sites.

We visited the Kennedy compound … actually the GATE of the Kennedy compound and the landing from which JFK used to set sail close by. We also took in a few cranberry bogs, Woods Hole, several wonderful lighthouses, and visited cottages with whale jaw gates.

He took me to Plymouth Harbor and Plymouth Rock — traditional landing site of the Mayflower Pilgrims who founded Plymouth Colony on this day in 1620.

This is the colony which ultimately became the United States of America.

I recall thinking it would have been larger … but it’s physical dimensions certainly didn’t disappoint and reflections of that day remain fond — as do each of my other memories of Jerry and that implacable spirit that was him and the wonderful pride he held in who he was and where he was born.
