Happy Birthday Reverend Dr. Billy Graham

Throughout my childhood I recall a recurrence which became both a truism and thematic element in my life. A television program would begin, typically in a stadium or other extremely large venue. The introduction of Reverend Billy Graham would be announced. At that moment I knew what we would be watching on television that night.

During my time on this Earth, Reverend Graham has been an influence because of the devout righteous woman who is my mother. She always ensured that religion was a large part of our life. We always said our prayers at bed time and meals.

We always attended church whenever it was remotely feasible. We always watched the Billy Graham Crusades and heard the singing of George Beverly Shea and that is simply the life I knew as a child.

I have always thought it just to be another aspect of my enchanted life and that there are many far less fortunate than I because of her influence.

Something he said has always stuck with me. I recall an interview shortly after the passing of his beloved wife Mrs. Ruth Graham when he was discussing mortality and that inevitability we all must face. He smiled and said how he knew that he would soon see his wife again and that he was not afraid in the least. When asked why he said to the journalist:

I know who I am, where I’ve been, and most of all where I’m going.
