Impotence Awareness Month

I was a bit surprised to find this particular observance popping up on various civic calendar lists around the net. I am equally reticent to tackle it as a topic for discussion, but here goes …

The preponderance of ‘male enhancement’ products specifically targeting impotence — and various physical attributes of the male equipment imparts a rather dubious light upon what is a very significant problem to those who suffer from the affliction.

Impotence … erectile dysfunction if you will; is a dysfunctional manifestation characterized by failure to achieve satisfactory sexual performance in men. Typically, affected individuals either fail to achieve satisfactory erectile state, or lose it prematurely resulting in a level of coital frustration usually unsurpassed in social dynamics.

Schoolboys often laugh at inappropriate erections. Sooner or later the realization that the condition is not permanent provides a modicum of relief from the stress which may arise as the result of this occurrence.

Men often joke about erectile dysfunction. It would appear from clinical statistical data correlating the condition to other issues such as depression that the problem is really not very funny.

Sometimes the cause is in the brain. Other times the cause is in the fluid dynamics or biofeedback mechanisms. Then there are drugs, interpersonal relationships, stress, or behaviors which may be causative factors.

Regardless of the cause — or whether it can be remedied — impotence is not a humorous condition and those who suffer from this problem should be worthy of our compassion; not our ridicule.
