My parents engaged in foster care during my young adulthood.
They kept a variety of children who needed the boundless love they had to share.
One of those regrets that pass through my thoughts every now and then was not taking the time to get to know these children. It seems my misguided career goals and equally narrow social focus were barriers to the enrichment those relationships could have provided.
November is National Adoption Awareness Month. This month is designated to raise awareness regarding the adoption of children and youth from foster care. This month’s theme is ‘You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent’.
Child welfare is essential to the nurture required for personal growth of children into happy and productive citizens. Adoption can easily meet the needs of two or more people. It transcends the boundaries of material commitment — and all it takes is what you have to offer. The best things in life aren’t even ‘things’. Surely there can be no higher calling than to rescue a child and make them your own.
