February is National Blah Buster Month

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

When I was a ‘youngun’ back in the heyday of black and white television prior to that time when all the networks can do is regurgitate various spins on reality programming and their cliche mix of personalities, plot lines, and outrageous soap opera mentality mediocrity … there were commercials.

Not some MacDonald’s mess with this hip hop female and her annoying forced rhyme ebonics hawking some greasy piece of fried cow on a dried out bun … like it’s “cool”. BOO !

There were many truly innovative pieces that were more than just selling a product; but substantive thought provoking entertainment.

Alka Seltzer ran such a series of ads back then … like the one where they claimed to have invented a new disease called ‘The Blahs’.

They had Gene Wilder narrate this animated character going through the throes of “the blahs is kind of like the blues only physical” and the head of an animated depressed looking character floating up and down and sideways and around until he partakes of the magic elixir that makes everything alright.

The blahs may also be a winter reference to ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ which is a wintertime indoor confinement phenomenon where people have symptoms of depression due to a lack of exposure to sunlight.

This is National Blah Buster Month. It’s a time to render comfort to that crabby whiner at work — that insufferable sourpuss at large; that depressed acting individual you encounter from time to time.

Though they may not share your joie de vivre this is a time where they too should be uplifted … supported — included.

Happy National Blah Buster Month !
